Various and sundry

Sorry for the dearth of posting lately, dear readers. Among other reasons, we spent the long weekend visiting my brother-in-law and his wife in Detroit. Fun activities included bourbon tasting, ice skating, visiting this book store, and worshiping with some local Methodists.

One thing that impressed itself on me about the service: it was very prayerful. I prefer a more liturgical service, and the lack of weekly communion would probably be a deal-breaker for me, but I got a taste of that Methodist piety, which has something to be said for it.

Another highlight: we watched the Robot Chicken: Star Wars DVD, which I absolutely can’t believe I haven’t seen before. Here’s a taste (fair warning: some slightly crude humor).

    When you run into prayer after you’ve been away from it, you see what you’ve been missing. My current congregation is much more prayerful than others I’ve been involved in. I find myself remembering to pray more on that account. While I wouldn’t want to trade liturgy for that, I can see why you would feel something important is missing. It’s like discovering or rediscovering the glory of a river when you’ve been up in the high mountains. I think the relative absence of that kind of prayer in various communions has probably not been the case in all times and places.

    I also think this is one of those matters that is corporate. Anyone can have personal prayer as part of his or her piety. But an environment of corporate prayer does make that much easier. Pastors should foster it. Pastors should speak as if it is normative. A grave mistake is made when it is assumed that we should all be doing this Lone Ranger style.
