A Thinking Reed

Twin Peaks is awesome

This wasn’t on my radar at all when it first aired (I guess my being 15 at the time may have had something to do with it), but we’ve been watching season 1 on DVD and it’s amazing. The way Lynch effortlessly crosses the boundaries between supernatural thriller, soap operatic melodrama, murder mystery, and even comedy is something to behold.

Given its premature cancellation, I’ve got a feeling we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment (Carnivale, anyone?), but it’ll be good while it lasts.

  1. THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!! I’m a huge Lynch fan! I have seen most of season 2 of Twin Peaks but a few years ago when I was renting it on VHS from the local Hollywood Video’s “cult classics” section the middle tape of the season was missing and so I had to stop. I never ended up finishing it, even though it is now out on DVD by itself as well as in that definitive gold box edition.

Even though I never finished it, I love the TP universe… Angelo Badalamenti’s score, it’s quirkiness, etc.

  2. As an aficionado of good TV, I’m looking forward to checking out Twin Peaks. I’ve known it was good and that I should watch it, but I haven’t run out of other good stuff yet to go looking for more. 🙂

I just finished The Wire a few weeks ago — if you haven’t seen that, you need to watch it. Right now I’m watching Season 2 of Homicide, trying to dull my pain with The Wire ending!

  3. In my humble opinion, the Twin Peaks Pilot, 29 episodes, and feature-length prequel “Fire Walk With Me” are 32 of the best hours of television (or television-inspired) material ever made. Are you a fan of Lynch’s other material (films, drawings, sculpture, etc.)? If not, TP is a perfect inroads into the transcendent world of David Lynch, so once you’re through with Twin Peaks, you should go straight for his film catalogue. You’ve inspired me to watch the Pilot again tonight (for the third time in 2008)!

  4. The first season is really great, but sadly it does go down from there.

There was a movie that TP fans never speak of.

  5. Wow, this brings back memories. I’ll have to write at my blog. I started to post a comment but it got way too long. I can still freak out my wife by slipping the CD into the player and selecting track 2, Laura Palmer’s Theme, when she isn’t looking.

  6. Listen to Fr. Chris! The Wire is the best! Haven’t seen Twin Peaks.

  7. OK, so the booze and tv posts attract the most comments. Now I know what the public wants.

Rest assured, though, my wife and I are working on season two of the Wire.

  8. Funny, I’m sitting here flipping channels waiting for “30 Rock” to come on and it appers that Kyle MacLachlan is now on “Desperate Housewives.”

  9. He has been for a while I think. My wife is a DH junkie and I’ve seen him on before.

  10. Firefly’s Captain Reynolds too!
