A Thinking Reed

"Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature, but he is a thinking reed" – Blaise Pascal

Oh, come on!

You can’t tell me that some dumb crack John Kerry – who, incidentally, isn’t standing for election – made is really among the serious issues facing the republic. This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel, folks.

  1. I agree that it’s a trivial matter, but you must admit that it was a really stupid remark to make, especially a week before the elections. Moreover, Kerry should have realized that the “joke” was in poor taste and apologized immediately. Instead, he lashed out at the Administration, thereby turning this into a really big story. As a person who is hoping for a Democratic landslide, I’m more than a little pissed off at his ineptitude. The Republicans are self-destructing; the last thing the Democrats should do is throw them a lifesaver.

  2. I agree, but on a positive note, hopefully this could mean the end of Kerry’s run for pres in 2008. Now, if we could just get Al Gore to call Barbara Bush a whore, Hillary to disparage Mother Teresea and Condi Rice to say that the Beatles suck, we could move on to the serious candidates.

  3. I would never vote for Kerry, but I think his statement was too ambiguous to be made into an issue unless people are grasping at straws.

  4. I agree with all of the above. Kerry displayed poor judgment, which is no great shock considering what a remarkably inept candidate he was, but the fact that it’s being made into an issue only shows, imo, how desperate the GOP is at this point.

    It’s gettin’ ugly out there.

p.s. Joshie – there are serious candidates?

  5. excellent point, Lee.

  6. Lee – you beat me to the point that this just shows how desperate the Reublicans are at this point. Yes, Kerry is an idiot and made a stupid comment, but if this isn’t grasping at straws, I don’t know what is.

  7. You all should read Thomas Friedman’s article from a few days ago on how little this matters:

  8. Hm. I may have to revise my general view that Thomas Friedman is wrong about everything. Or perhaps I now have to revise my view that this doesn’t matter!

  9. Yeah, I’m a bit of a mixed bag and don’t quite jive with Friedman’s typical worldview myself, but I think that’s why that particular op-ed is resonating and getting passed around so much because he brought it back and told it like it was. Kerry is ridiculously irrelevant, which made the jumping on it, well…ridiculous – and allowed for some Amen Truth to come out from both Friedman et al on the true tragedy that everyone wants to politicize/ignore who’s in power
