A Thinking Reed

MySpace

A recent conversation with a longtime friend of mine:

Longtime friend: “You should get a MySpace account. It’s a great way to find people you’ve lost touch with.”

Me: “I had good reasons for burning those bridges.”

  1. MySpace is sucking the life out of America. It’s almost as bad as Blogger. (heh)

  2. Did you see Robert Samuelson’s column on the same topic?

  3. Just read it (here’s the link for those interested:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/19/AR2006091901439.html). The stats on the breakdown of blog content is interesting and I would never have guessed the ratio of diary-style blogs to political ones was so skewed.

I think he’s onto something, clearly. I sometimes wonder what my own motives for blogging are – when I started my idea was that I would organize my thoughts on a variety of things and provide an outlet for political rantings (thus sparing my long-suffering wife!). But the gratification of having an audience (however small) certainly feeds an egoistic impulse. After all, if I just wanted to muse, I could keep a journal (and have off and on for many years).

I guess at the end of the day I think the interaction with other folks is what justifies the blog. Especially with a tiny niche blog like this most of the people I’ve come into contact with are remarkably smart and interesting and not interested in the kind of dumb, inflammatory stuff you see elsewhere on the web.

Something like MySpace seems to me much less interesting (though I’ve only glanced at it briefly). I don’t even really understand how people can spend a lot of time on there. Maybe that means I’m getting old. šŸ™‚
