A Thinking Reed

"Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature, but he is a thinking reed" – Blaise Pascal

What about the fishies?

I’ve justified my persisting “semi”-vegetarianism on the grounds that fish suffer less than birds and mammals and are spared the intense suffering of the factory farm.

However, this site argues that fish do indeed suffer in ways comparable to birds and mammals and that commercial fishing and “aquaculture” inflict a great deal of it on them. Something worth thinking about.

  1. But…but…what about the scientific song… you know, the one carefully researched by Nirvana… about fish and their feelings…and things being okay….

  2. That site is actually a PETA site, if you look carefully in the upper right-hand corner, and is a part of their new program to turn the tide of public opion against the consuption of fish, like they so sucessfully turned public opinion against the consumption of beef, pork and poultry.

  3. Right. That’s definitely not an unbaised site. And I am always a bit wary of PETA because I know they’re against the use of animals in principle, so I worry that they might be exaggerating the facts that bolster their case.

Of course, a lot of the stuff against these positions that you see is funded by the meat industry!

Anyway, fwiw, here’s a link to the BBC report on the study that purported to show that fish feel pain:
