A Thinking Reed

"Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature, but he is a thinking reed" – Blaise Pascal

By the way…

I’m glad Chris Daughtry got voted off American Idol last night. He’s a decent singer, but he turns everything he sings into some kind of bland late-90s “alternative” rock. (And I still haven’t forgiven him for his unutterably bad rendition of Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line.” *shudder*)

Personally, I’ve been rooting for Elliott for a while now. I like his smooth-yet-humble vibe and, like Taylor, he seems to really love and appreciate music recorded more than five years ago.

  1. I’ve never seen the show, but let me wager a guess about that dude: did he turn everything into a “yrreeaah” song like a Scott Stapp, Collective Soul, Days of the New, or early Stone Temple Pilots? (I actually like the last three, for all their 90’s-ness, btw :P)

  2. Well, he said his all-time favorite band is Live. I mean, I like Live alright, but all-time favorite? And he did do a Creed song one night.

  3. STP and Collective Soul?! I lost just a little bit of respect for you there eric. 😉

Anyway, what ticks me off about the show is that, as our church choir director pointed out the other night, they are forced to sing whatever the producers force them to sing, no matter what sort of style best suits their voice and style. A soul singer is not going to sound good singing Bohemian Rhapsody, I don’t care how good they are. The contest world be better if they would just sing in a style that suits them instead of what Simon makes them sing. Then the performers could be judged at their best, and not sound like Pavarotti singing John Denver’s “You Fill Up My Senses” (which if you’ve ever heard it, is one of the worst things ever recorded).

I’m sure my congregation (well, at least my wife) gets tired of me preaching about how American Idol and its cronies turn ordinary people into judge and jury over others, precisely what Christ tells us not to do in so many ways. I think Simon is even there to excite our judgmentalness (How can he be so judgmental? I would never be that nasty,…etc.) The whole concept, to me, seems misguided at best and malevolent at worst.

  5. haha, I’m flattered anybody had any respect for me to begin with! I actually don’t listen to any of those bands I listed with any frequency with the exception of Days of the New from time to time. My ears mostly live on a steady diet of Dresden Dolls (lately), Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins, and whatever else you might find on my Last.fm page here:

Anybody else use that service? It shows my most-listened-to tracks out of the 21,000+ I’ve played since last September. Whoa.

  6. While I’m at it, I really have to recommend the recently-released re-master of Brian Eno + David Byrne’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts 🙂
