Curses!

I may have mentioned previously that we are relocating to the Boston area this summer. By all accounts Boston is a great town, and I’m really looking forward to the move.

However, I am disgruntled to discover that Yuengling doesn’t distribute to Massachusetts! For those not in the know, Yuengling (‘ying-ling’), the self-proclaimed oldest brewery in America (located in Pottsville, Pa.), is the maker of the most widely-drunk beer in the Philadelphia area, Yuengling Lager. Unlike most of your mass-marketed American lagers, Yuengling makes a smooth-drinkin’ lager that actually tastes good and is comparatively cheap. Walk into any bar in Philly and simply order “lager” and Yuengling is what you’ll get. Not to mention they make a good porter and Black and Tan as well.


Though, by all accounts, Boston is no slouch when it comes to beer, so I’ll no doubt be able to cope.

    My mother ran into a similar problem when she moved to rural Pennsylvania: she couldn’t find any good tea. I used to buy imported tea here in L.A. and mail it to her. Then she discovered Internet tea merchants, and her problem was solved. (Though admittedly, it’s not the sort of thing you order in a bar.)

    I recommend the Sam Adams brewery tour and John Harvard’s Brew Pub – both are excellent.

    No Yuengling!! That is terrible. Ever since I’ve moved out here to North Carolina a few years ago, Yuengling is my brew of choice. Alot of my friends come from the Phily area (Lancaster County) and that’s what they drink. Ever Friday evening, we sit on a friend’s porch and drink that beautiful lager, America’s oldest brew. Hopefully I will find myself in Yuengling territory wherever I may move.

    I had the same experience when I was lived in California. There, it was Fat Tire, brewed at New Belgium Brewery in Ft. Collins CO. That was the beer of choice for me and my friends. Now, when I have a choice between a Yuengling and a Fat Tire, I go for the Yuengling.

    Yuengling is a special thing. Massachusetts is missing out on something special . . . .

    Sorry to hear that you’re leaving Philly. Boston is a great city, but Philadelphia is a great city and is home to me (I grew up in Delco, and have lived in the city and all four counties, and also in Mercer Co, NJ). My brother-in-law made the move from Philly to Boston, and each time he comes home he takes a case or two of Yuengling home with him . . . .

    I’ll give you that Lee. Bell’s (and Arcadia in Battle Creek) is very very good but their lower end stuff is $7.99 a bottle.
