Lent for Protestants

Observing it has become more common among evangelicals and other low-church Protestants according to this article. As far as I know Lent is de rigueur among Lutherans, but maybe that’s a relatively recent development too (as is, for instance, weekly communion apparently).

Our church is about the only Methodist church I’ve heard of that actually does an Ash Wednesday Service. Our pastor says its because she was always jealous of her friends in school who got to have ashes, but I suspect there’s a bit more to it thant that!

I’m always amazed that people value the Ash Wednesday service so highly. There is something about receiving the ashes, whether it is physical touch, or simply the solemnity of the service which gets to people. Whatever, it’s a good thing.

Evangelicals are rediscovering the Tradition because they have none of their own. It would be interesting to see an Ash Wednesday service in a megachurch, though.
