Out of Step

Keeping with the consumerism theme (sort of) here’s an interesting article on the history of the “straight edge” movement (i.e. punks who eschew drinking, drugs, smoking, casual sex, and often meat).

Me, I just really liked the album “12” by Minor Threat.

I had a couple of straight edge friends in highschool. This one kid, Eric, was a heck of a football player. He was the only one on the team I couldn’t completely humiliate in head up drills.

I always found straight-edgers annoying. Some were cool, but many of them were holier-than-thou, and so militantly PETA (end animal slavery! set the hamsters free!) that it was hard to have any sort of dialogue with them whatsoever.

I had a good friend in college who was sXe – vegan and the whole 9 yards. Anyway, he once got annoyed that a bunch of the local sXe kids were (shudder) Christians! I, always willing to play the devil’s advocate, mentioned that it seemed to me, as a non-Christian and non-sXe-er, that the two were actually quite compatible. I then pointed out that it didn’t make much sense to me that he was for animal liberation but a-ok with abortion. He didn’t like that much either…

Some would say that non-Christian sXe is parasitical and irrational. Myself included.

yeah it always seemed odd to me that killing animals to eat is wrong but killing fetuses for convience was not. If you were at least eating the fetuses, that might make more sense.
