The Elitist

John Lukacs is a grouchy European-style conservative who doesn’t go in for what he deems the populist demagoguery of the American Right. Read a profile of him here.

    Thanks for passing this along.

Lukacs was quoted in an article in the old Re:Generation Quarterly — the print predecessor to The New Pantagruel — to the effect that “You can’t call yourself a conservative and be on the side of the developers and other agents of sprawl.” (The article was, I believe, “Why aren’t conservatives conservationists?”)

I think that’s right, and I am very sympathetic to the concerns of the old-style conservatives like Russell Kirk who saw the connection between conservatism and conservation. In fact, right now I’m reading W. Wesley McDonald’s “Russell Kirk and the Age of Ideology.” One of McDonald’s purposes in writing the book is to distinguish Kirk’s thought from the present day conservative movement that so often invokes his name (well, less so now than it used to).
