  1. Lee, this is off subject but I was wondering if you know how to determine if there are companies that sell eggs that are cruelty-free?

    1. Hi Crystal–Sorry for taking so long to reply to this. To answer your question, there are a variety of labeling schemes that purport to tell you something about the conditions under which egg-producing hens were raised. As you might guess, they vary a lot in terms of standards, enforcement, etc. You can see a rundown of the different labels and their meaning here: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/confinement_farm/facts/guide_egg_labels.html

      Another option, if it’s available to you, would be to make connection to a local producer (maybe via a farmers market) who you could talk to or whose farm you could visit to see first-hand how the chickens are treated.
