A Thinking Reed

"Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature, but he is a thinking reed" – Blaise Pascal

OT bleg

Any readers have recommendations for secondary material on the Book of Daniel? I’m looking for something a bit more specific than a typical commentary: information on the history of its reception and/or interpretation. Any book- or article-length suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. The place to start on history of interp is the article in the Dictionary of Biblical Interpretation by Towner. I think the introductory material to J. J. Collin’s truly tremendous Hermeneia commentary would have some great stuff as well. Come to think of it, his little book in the Forms of the OT Literature vol XX, Daniel with an Introduction to Apocalyptic Literature might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Of course, his Apocalyptic Imagination is just an amazing read and changed my life the first time I encountered it…

Let me know if you want me to send you some scans…

    1. Thanks for the recs. Derek! Is there anything a little less on the academic side that you’d recommend? I should’ve mentioned that this is for a family member who’s doing a bible study on Daniel and wants to get a bit up to speed on some of the ways it’s been interpreted over the ages.

(Incidentally, I’m now intrigued to read Apocalyptic Imagination….)
