A Thinking Reed

"Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature, but he is a thinking reed" – Blaise Pascal

What’s going on with TEC?

The headlines say that the Episcopal Church has overturned its “moratorium” on gay bishops. N.T. Wright, predictably, scolds the Americans for fomenting “schism.” But more nuanced interpretations of what’s going on are available. See Christopher here and Father Jones at the Anglican Centrist here.

  1. What’s wrong with formenting schism? We’re Americans, bb! That’s what our founders of blessed memory did done! We live out here on the frontier, blazing trails! I’m being silly and kind of blasphemous now, aren’t I! But the silliest thing and biggest blasphemy in the United States is that 1 in 8 of our people and 1 in 6 people on the planet go to bed hungry and we’re more concerned who they’re going to bed with!

  2. The good bishop does seem to like centralized authority a bit too much for my taste. (I say that as a non-Episcopalian, but sympathetic observer.)
