The city of Cincinnati, as part of its “Green City” initiative, is suggesting that residents eat less meat (via). While this topic’s been getting more press lately, it still seems to get relatively little discussion in environmental circles. Is this because greens are afraid of looking like lifestyle nannies? (See here for more on that.)
I like the idea of suggesting that people try eating one or two meat-free meals a day rather than demanding they become vegetarian. And it would be even better if you could show people how tasty meat-free eating can be. For instance, we had a potluck at our church last week, occasions not known for being veggie-friendly. But my wife and I made a big pot o’ vegetarian chili and it was a big hit. (Even with several meat-filled alternatives.) I like to think this was because it looked, smelled, and tasted great. Surely Cinci, a city known for its unique chili, could promote a yummy veggie version. That’s change people could believe in.
