Earthbound and down

Also from the Atlantic–a primer on Battlestar Galactica (may contain spoilers for the uninitiated). The anecdote about Dirk Benedict, who played the original series’ “Starbuck” (and “Face” on the A-Team!), being outraged that the character was re-imagined as a woman is pretty funny.

I’m really looking forward to the new season starting this Friday (or in my non-cable-having case, whenever they decide to post the episodes on the Web), but, like the author, I’m nervous that they won’t be able to tie all the loose threads together in a satisfying way. (I have similar concerns about Lost, but they’ve at least got a few more seasons to go.)

    I’m only on Episode Five of Season One, so I won’t be reading the article but I’m glad to know it’s out there for future reference. I gather this upcoming season is the last?

    Lost has this upcoming season and then one more.

    It’s actually the second half of season 4 that’s about to start. The season was split in two with a 7-month hiatus in between because of the writers’ strike. And it’s supposed to be the end.

    I think there’s supposed to be a prequel series about life on Caprica prior to the rise of the cylons, starting maybe this fall?

    I rather liked the article. I am not against such re-imagining in general, but he might well have been right about the particular case.

    Actually, his point about the new series being unremittingly bleak is pretty accurate. Is there redemption in the BSG universe? The jury’s still out. There certainly isn’t humor or levity of any sort (perhaps inevitably). A lot of the rest of the article sounds a little too much like cranky old-guy ranting (“In my day men were men and women were women and we knew right from wrong!” etc.)
