A Thinking Reed

"Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature, but he is a thinking reed" – Blaise Pascal

Tom Turkey in hell

Surprise! When you reduce animals to the status of things, they tend to get treated like…things.

I don’t want to get all vegetarian self-righteous here, but here’s a thought. Thanksgiving is, among other things, about, well, giving thanks to the Author of our being. And surely part of that thanks-giving is treating that which we receive from the Creator’s hand (in this case, animals for our sustenance) as gifts to be reverently received and treated accordingly. Do we do honor to the Creator by turning his creatures into commodities, things in a mechanized process that denies their very existence as living, sentient beings? I hope that we can all answer “no” to that.

(By the way, this is an example of good work by PETA, despite their sometimes questionable marketing tactics.)

  1. Commodities?

    You mean like apples?

    Or like lawyers?

Anything you put up for sale is a commodity.

Including yourself on the labor market.

  2. True – I could’ve been more precise. Animals raised for food in our factory farming system are reduced virtually to pure commodities. By contrast, I have rights in the labor market that aren’t reducible to the value of my labor as a commodity; there are respects in which I still expect to be treated as an end in myself.

  3. So what do you normally have for Thanksgiving, Lee? I have some veggie cousins who have a tradition of meatless lasagna, but somehow that doesn’t really enhance the sweet potatoes, if you know what I mean.

  4. This year we’re contributing stuffed winter squash with mushroom risotto. (Though my sister considertely always provides a pasta dish of some kind too.) In past years we’ve done a hearty winter vegetable stew.

Of course, there’s always the tofurkey!
