A Thinking Reed

Department of odd arguments

Emmylou Harris fans vs. Allison Krauss fans.

I may be simple, but I would’ve thought the fan base for these two artists would have a pretty substantial overlap; it certainly wouldn’t have occurred to me that their differences would generate such heated debate! I’m a fan of both these ladies and have seen them both perform (on the same stage no less–at the San Francisco Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park). Surely we’re not talking irreconcilable differences here.

Anyway, I think I prefer Gillian Welch to either one.

  1. Allison Krauss has a beautiful voice but her songs are deadly dull. I have tried and tried to like her but I can’t. Emmylou Harris is much more interesting.

But I agree with you: Welch is easily the best of the three.

  2. Yeah, I agree with you there. Though I can still enjoy some of Krauss’s stuff (“New Favorite” is the album I have, I think).

  3. I’m a Harris fan. When Red Dirt Girl came out, I heard it playing in Barnes and Noble. I asked who it was. I was surprised to find I was an instant fan of someone named Emmylou Harris. I like some of the older recordings, too. The song “Boulder to Birmingham” is especially good, and her younger voice could really belt it.
