Animals in a war zone

Fascinating article by conservationist Lawrence Anthony about his efforts to protect zoo animals (and others) in Baghdad during the war.

It’s an interesting question for the ethics of war: has anyone ever considered animals as potential “collateral damage”?

One response to “Animals in a war zone”

  1. Cornelius Ryan’s The Last Battle had several stories about the plight of the Berlin Zoo.

I doubt the Geneva Convention mentions animals, especially now that horses are no longer routinely used in warfare.

Grant’s allowing the soldiers of the defeated Army of Northern Virginia to keep their horses was reportedly much appreciated by Lee.
