A Thinking Reed

Bang your head

This may well fall into the category of things that precisely no one reading this blog cares about, but I’m very excited about the upcoming release of the new Shadows Fall album early next month.

SF is part of the newer breed of American heavy metal that combines hardcore and death metal influences with a more melodic sound influenced by my beloved ’80s thrash (other examples of the genre are Killswitch Engage and Trivium, both of whom put out excellent albums in 2006). This is emphatically not to be confused with the late and unlamented “nu-metal” of the late ’90s and early ’00s.

Album review here. Listen to samples at the band’s MySpace page. BONUS: Peta interview with singer Brian Fair.

  1. Never even suspected you were a headbanger, Lee. Learn something new every day. Iron Maiden was one of my first rock concerts, probably back in ’82 or so. (Gotta love a band that quotes Chesterton). I always thought Metallica was too glam.

  2. I wouldn’t call myself an authority on metal by any means, but don’t you think it is a little weird that a metal band has a MySpace page?

  3. What I don’t know about MySpace could fill a book, but it seems to me that a lot of bands, entertainers, etc. have some kind of MySpace presence these days. That’s where the kids are! Or so I’ve been told.

  4. If they did not have a myspace page I would think that was weird….if you want to be heard, post where you can be. Lee, if you are fan of SF and KillSwitch then you should check out Demon Hunter. Same style as SF and they happen to be a Christian band as well.

  5. Thanks for the tip, nothead. I’ll check ’em out.
