Blasphemous bloggers?

My only comment on the John Edwards/bloggers brouhaha is to note how deeply even “conservative” religious groups have drunk from the well of liberal interest-group ideology. For consider: all parties to the argument implicitly agree that the issue is one of bigotry – whether hatred was expressed toward a particular group of people – rather than, say, blasphemy.

I realize you’re not going to get very far in modern America complaining about bloggers’ blasphemous remarks; it’s just interesting how religion is being assimilated to the category of a personal trait of its adherents, analogous to race or sex, rather than being about, y’know, God.

  1. Exactly. Shouldn’t I be too busy praying to get offended? Were any of these conservatives seriously contemplating John Edwards as a viable vote anyway? If not, why should he care whether he offends them (& me)?

I refuse to be made a victim. I wouldn’t mind being made a martyr, but no one’s offering at the moment.

  2. There was an interesting article discussing the problems the whole issue raises for religious liberals, who tended to agree with the conservatives on this particular point, and who really are a key constituency, but were wholly ignored by everyone.

This would have been a great opportunity for some of the more vociferous not merely to make a protest on the issue of bigotry, but also to counter the issue of blasphemy, not by complaining, but by providing an example of how much better serious talk about God is than any sort of blasphemy.

  3. Yeah, I was really bored with all that nonsense in the first 5 minutes.
