Living in the Berkeley of the East Coast

Someone told me the other day that in something like 80% of the congressional races in Massachusetts there is no Republican even running. However, in my district, the incumbent Democrat, Michael Capuano, is not running unopposed. It just so happens that his opponent is running on the Socialist Workers Party ticket.

We also have three local non-binding resolutions on the ballot (these are in addition to the statewide ballot questions). One is a call to withdraw from Iraq and the other two have to do with divestment from Israel. Who would’ve thought our local precincts would have their own foreign policy?

  1. When I lived in Massachusetts during the beginning of the gay marriage hullaballoo, I was surprised at all the Democratic infighting (as opposed to partisan squabbling) over the constitutional amendment, etc. With a large and fairly socially conservative Catholic population, you still get some of the same conservative vs. liberal arguments, it’s just that no one wants to call himself a Republican.
