Ever find yourself wondering “Just what is the difference between thrash metal and speed metal?” Turns out it’s mainly in the punk-influenced sound of the former. Good to know.

But, you know, you just can never be sure you’re getting accurate content on an open encyclopedia. For instance, I would have considered Metallica’s “Kill ‘Em All” to be speed metal, not thrash (which I tended to associate with skateboarding, TSOL [not mentioned] for example), and yet Wikipedia puts it in thrash. And I would have thought Metallica had moved out of both genres by the “Master of Puppets” release.
Maybe I’ll go edit the Wikipedia entries. 😉

This site would appear to agree with you:

Complicating matters, the American Heritage Dictionary appears to regard speed and thrash as synonymous:

Clearly this requires further research!

Where would Hardcore Punk fit into that? It seems like the lines between those three categories are pretty blurred musically. They only seem to make sense from a marketing standpoint. Speed metal is punk-influenced metal listened to by metalheads and trash and hardcore are metal-influenced punk listened to by skaters and punks.

Good point. I knew skaters in high school who loved, say D.R.I. but wouldn’t be caught dead listening to Slayer.

Ah, but DRI is a big part of the problem because they clearly crossed over (on the “Crossover” album, no less) from punk to metal.
