Mea culpa, Barbara

I owe Barbara Lee an apology. When I lived in Berkeley, CA, Ms. Lee was our congressional representative. To no one’s surprise, I’m sure, she was (and is) rather far to the Left.

Shortly after 9/11 I wrote an e-mail to her office taking Rep. Lee to task for being the only member of the House to vote against the resolution authorizing the use of force against the perpetrators of the attacks. By my reasoning, the country had been attacked, and if there was any time for military action this was it.

But now that President Bush seems to have taken that resolution as granting him blanket authority to do, well, pretty much anything he wants without the tedious restraints of the law, Rep. Lee is looking pretty prescient.

Matthew Yglesias says that Congress needs to re-write the 9/12/2001 resolution for just this reason. Also, b/c it needs a simple majority to do so, whereas impeaching and removing the President from office requires a 2/3s majority.
