The new monkery

The Christian Century has an article on the “new monasticism” – a budding movement of Christians forming intentional communities, pooling resources, and trying to act as witnesses in some of the poorer areas of the U.S. (see also this article from Christianity Today).

As much as I admire people who do things like this, I have to say that I have no desire of any kind to live in such an arrangement myself. Maybe I’ve been co-opted by the bourgeois values of the American empire, but I just don’t want to live in such close quarters with other people (my dear wife excepted, naturally).
