Gilbert Meilaender on Terri Schiavo

Christianity Today interviews Gilbert Meilaender on feeding tubes and the “right to die.” As usual Meilaender is full of sober wisdom. His book Faith and Faithfulness is one of the best books on Christian ethics I’ve come across.

You might want to read his book on bioethics. I found it to be profoundly disturbing.

In a good or bad way?

In a bad way. He is against Christians donating organs, having prenatal testing, and the like. He argues a lot based on conspiracy theories and unproven assertions. I kinda wish that book hadn’t been my first introduction to him. I have been reluctant to read anything else by him.

Weird! He has always seemed so reasonable to me in his other writings! I mean, he is definitely on the conservative side of some issues, but reasonably so, I always thought.

I know, its a very odd book. I’ve read things by him in the Christian Century that I thought were pretty good, but that book still troubles me.
