That would be my less than charitable description of this journal – The New Libertarian (first issue is available to non subscribers – password is ‘tnlv1i1’). Their preferred locution is “pragmatic on domestic policy, hawkish on foreign policy.” It features the work of Max Borders, whose repellent Hobbesean libertarianism I critiqued here.

Yeah, I’ve never been a libertarian as you know, but I have been exetremely puzzled by the large numbers of “libertarians” on TV and Blogistan who seem to be anything but, speaking warmly of the patriot act, the W cult of personality, colonialism and much much more.
I think “libertarian” sounds very manly and independent and thus is very appealing to a lot of Republican-leaning rugged individualists.
The cynic in me might say there is a deliberate attempt by the Reps to co-opt the term and bring liberarians into the GOP fold.

Though I don’t consider myself a libertarian anymore, it is depressing to see a movement calling itself “libertarian” that basically abandons what I still think of as the good parts of that creed (e.g. opposition to reckless foreign policy & unchecked gov’t power in support of same). I’m tempted to think that many of these folks are people who vote GOP for economic & foreign policy reasons but want to distance themselves from social conservatives. This is reinforced by the fact that many of these alleged libertarians are loudly in favor of government-funded embyonic stem-cell research. Now, whatever you think about stem cell research, you would think no self-respecting libertarian would be for government funded stem cell research!
