Apparently Oprah dedicated an entire episode of her show to how animals are treated in factory farms (and has even experimented with a vegan diet). I’m no Oprah fan, but I imagine this is probably the most exposure that most of Oprah’s many, many viewers have ever gotten to this issue. Good on her.

Peter J. Gomes on Colbert
I saw him preach once at the Harvard chapel “lessons and carols” Christmas service. His preaching was much more full of Jesus than I expected a service at Harvard to be.

The price of not having cable
One week later, and I’m still waiting for the Sci Fi Channel to post the Battlestar Galactica (sort of) season finale to their website (which, by all accounts, was mind-blowing). Grumble.

Fair warning
I’m considering a post – perhaps a series! – on the greatness of my long-beloved Beverly Hills 90210. My wife and I have been watching the just-released DVD of season 4. So great.

Twin Peaks is awesome
This wasn’t on my radar at all when it first aired (I guess my being 15 at the time may have had something to do with it), but we’ve been watching season 1 on DVD and it’s amazing. The way Lynch effortlessly crosses the boundaries between supernatural thriller, soap operatic melodrama, murder mystery, and even comedy is something to behold.
Given its premature cancellation, I’ve got a feeling we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment (Carnivale, anyone?), but it’ll be good while it lasts.

Fly, Conchords, fly!
A friend of ours sent us the first season DVD of the HBO show Flight of the Conchords about two guys in a band from New Zealand who move to New York with misadventures aplenty ensuing. It’s pretty hilarious: they frequently break into songs of various genres. As in these clips:
“Most Beautiful Girl in the Room”
“Think About It”
“Humans Are Dead”
